Glass Gem Corn and More - 2017 Garden Wrap-Up

My proudest life accomplishment? Probably growing this corn right here.

A lot happened in the garden this year. I grew some things for the first time (corn, eggplant, potatoes, kale) along with old favorites (tomatoes, peppers, onions, broccoli, beans, cumbers, and herbs).

Without a doubt, the coolest thing I grew was Glass Gem Corn. I put corn kernels in the soil back in early May and within a week, plants had popped out of the ground.

BEFORE (see the little sprouts on the left)

AFTER (by August, the corn stalks completely covered the window on the left side of the house)

I also grew eggplant for the first time and it's been extremely proficient. Check out these gorgeous white and Turkish Orange Eggplant that I'm still harvesting in October.

The biggest surprise of all this year has been kale! I planted kale seeds back in April and I've been harvesting a week's worth of kale every Monday since June. The great thing about kale is that when you harvest the bottom leaves, new leaves sprout from the top. This is one of my many monster kale plants that are starting to look like palm trees.

Rounding out the harvest, I grew tomatoes, broccoli, peppers, cucumbers, onions and beans. And my Purple Molokai Potatoes are still growing, so check back in the next month for my first ever potato reveal!

Growing vegetables has been a magical experience and I hope that my experiences will inspire you to throw some seeds in the dirt and see what you can grow.
