Alum Creek State Park

Can't argue with the sign welcoming campers to Alum Creek State Park.

I can't believe I've lived in central Ohio my entire life and I'm just now discovering Alum Creek State Park.

Like most people, I'm guilty of daydreaming about far off campsites by the ocean and the mountains instead of taking the time to enjoy the beautiful sites closer to home. But Alum Creek State Park, just 20 minutes from downtown Columbus, is pretty dreamy as far as campgrounds go.

It's not easy to reserve a campsite right up on the water like this, but we were able to book this spot one week before the 4th of July weekend, and it was only $34. Our site was secluded by trees on both sides giving us ample privacy and there was a private walkway down to the water where Dave was able to catch a bunch of fish (including some large catfish).

You can see a map of all the campsites here. Our premium site was right on the water with an electrical hook-up, and after scouting out most of the 300+ spots, we both agreed that K23 and K21 were some of the nicest spots in the park.

Even if you're not camping, it's worth your time to check out Alum Creek State Park. There's an area for swimming, the Alum Creek Marina offers boat rentals, there are nature trails for hiking and biking, and there's even a DOG BEACH! The dog beach sits on the bank of Alum Creek and it's fenced in, so there were pups of all breeds and sizes having the time of their lives. If you have dogs that like water, you owe it to yourself, and to them, to visit the dog beach at Alum Creek State Park.
